Septic Tank Overview
Septic tanks may be installed where soil conditions meet the standards set by the environmental agency. When applying for consent to discharge during building work, the local authority will confirm if the site is suitable for installation of a septic tank.
As the majority of treatment of waste is carried out in the percolation area, it is important that the system and percolation area is designed in accordance with BS 6297:1983 and EN12566-4:2007. The holding tank is designed to contain the solids and prevent them from entering the percolation area. The percolation area must be designed adequately for treatment of the discharged effluent liquid.
